Boundaries at home
Posted by Adie on June 28th, 2008. Filed under: Family Matters.I have two brothers and three sisters. I am the eldest. I am an accountant and now a full-time blogger as well. The next one to me is my sister who is also an accountant and is now working for an international insurance company. The third one is my sister who is a teacher of special education (SPED). The fourth one is my brother who died of leukemia 10 years ago. The second to the last is my sister who is a high school teacher of English in a Chinese school somewhere in the metro. And the youngest is my brother who is now in college taking up Information Technology.
With four people already working, you can bet there are so many documents you can find lying around the house. There are office supplies everywhere. One unwritten rule in our household is that, no matter how messy one’s desk is, no one should feel the need to organize it. Otherwise, you’d find yourself under siege! Funny, no? But this is true in our case. The rational explanation behind this is since the person who created the mess is the only one who knows the content and position of the mess, he or she is the only one who can find things buried in the mess. If you organized it for him or her, chances are you will be misplacing something.
Growing up in a large family, it will really open your eyes to boundaries. And respect for one. We have it here at home.

hi! I exactly know what you mean! Although I’m an only child, I do have a disorganized desk. But in my disorganized life, I am organized. hehehehe I do know where everything is and if someone does “arrange” my stuff, things tend to get lost.

How fortuitous! I just finished an article discussing boundaries: “What People Think of Me is None of my Business“! I was EC dropping by and happened upon it.
I have seen more large families enjoy and understand boundaries more so than single children or even just with two siblings [who are taught to *share* everything].
Boundaries are probably the least discussed, oft overlooked but important recognition of where others end and one begin. I believe it’s the foundation for healthy self-respect and honoring of other people.
Thank you for sharing your experience here. Indeed you sound lucky.

Yeah. This is true. We are a family of fourteen and I really agree with you. I used to find myself brawls with my brothers before.
